Atoraye – Amtana.

Atoraye’s debut EP “Amtana”, which means “darkness” in Neo-Aramaic (modern Assyrian language) is an emotive reflection on a certain period of his life during personal and global upheaval.

The main instrument used in the collection of sample-based tracks is the oud - a Middle Eastern and North African fretless string instrument, which reflects his cultural background. The samples used in the music were collected by Atoraye during his journey to Lebanon in 2019, prior to the devastating explosion that rocked Beirut in 2020.

As a descendent of Assyrian and Pontic predecessors, two cultures which are no longer bound to a specific territory, Atoraye explores his roots through Amtana’s sonic palette, in an attempt to locate his cultural heritage within himself, and which stands in stark contrast to the Russian monoculture in which he grew up and currently inhabits.

Side B of the release is an intimate recording of a relative's funeral service, sung by a clergy member in Neo-Aramaic. The recording is augmented by Atoraye's instrumental interpretation of the final rite of passage - death.

Amtana в переводе с ново-арамейского (современный язык ассирийцев) означает “тьма”. Этот альбом – высказывание, проявление эмоций, которые я испытывал за определенный период своей жизни. Реакция на события личные и глобальные. Приход к определенной идеологии и структуре работы со звуковым материалом. Эти композиции дали вектор для дальнейшего музыкального развития.

Главным инструментом этого альбома является уд – восточный струнный инструмент. Уд является основным инструментом на всем ближнем востоке и северной африке. Он безладовый, это позволяет играть четверть тона. Собственно на микротональности основана вся восточная теория музыки. Она дает больший диапазон для раскрытия эмоциональных переживаний.
Помимо прочего, в композициях используются семплы, записанные мной из поездки в Ливан, в город Бейрут в 2019 году. Бейрут – это город который я всей душой люблю, в котором я смог почувствовать спокойствие. К сожалению события 2020 года нанесли ему большой ущерб….

В своей музыке Atoraye пытается скрестить восточную традиционную теорию музыки и современное западное экспериментальное звучание. Являясь носителем ассирийской и понтийской крови, одна из основных моих идеей в в его творчестве это совмещение культур и звучания.
